After months of renovations the Terry Fox Fitness Trail at Assiniboine Park re-opened Friday.

The Terry Fox Fitness Trail in Assiniboine Park has gotten a new lease on life with a wood-to-steel upgrade.

After 30 years of wear and tear, the trail was showing its age.

"Terry Fox is such a Canadian icon that we felt we just absolutely had to ensure that his legacy, his name on this trail was kept alive for the future,"said Don Peterkin, COO of the Assiniboine Park conservancy.

The idea of a fitness trail was a new concept when it arrived in the park. Peterkin said it's now been upgraded to stand the test of time.

The upgrades on the fitness trail include 12 fitness equipment stations, a widened path and over 100 threes and shrubs planted along the trail. (CBC)

"We have now the next generation of material," he said. "It's going to withstand heavy wear and tear and use, and we think it's going to last for the next three or four decades."

The upgrades to the fitness equipment are not the only improvements. The one kilometer pathway has been widened, and over 100 trees and shrubs were planted along the trail in conjunction with Garden Days.
