Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in and near Winnipeg (July 14-16)
Synonym’s Triple Feature: ACT III, Evan Sabourin art show and Barn Hammer's 1st birthday among highlights
This weekend has very good music, comedy, art, beer and a patently strange family festival, which is basically all I ever ask for when I'm writing this column.
The party to dress cute for this weekend is happening at Clementine Friday night, the low-key show to go to with all your good friends is at Wee Johnny's, and the thing to go to with your cousin who is in from out of town is at Barn Hammer's brewery.
There's also a brilliant art show in St. Boniface, and if you feel like a drive, a festival for the whole family in St-Pierre-Jolys. As long as you're cool with frogs.
WHAT: MUSIC — Synonym's Triple Feature: ACT III
When: Friday, July 14 at 9 p.m.
Where: Clementine at 123 Princess St.
Cost: $15
They're converting breakfast stop Clementine into a nightclub for the last time to raise money for their annual mural festival in September.
The lineup for this one has already been leaked — House of Gold Diamonds (the duo of Mama Cutsworth and DJ J. Jackson) will be spining and there'll be a drag show.
This is a great spot for a dance party, so go check it out before it turns back into a breakfast place forever.
WHAT: COMEDY — Winnipeg Fringe Festival preview show
When: Friday, July 14 at 9 p.m.
Where: Wee Johnny's at 177 McDermot Ave.
Cost: $5
The show will preview a whole bunch of funny fringe plays, including Matt Nightingale's Faster, Stronger, BLEECHMAN!; J.D. Renaud's Story Hole; Guns Blazing; HUNKS 3; Stephen and Caity's Comedy is Funny Again; President Bear's show; Adam Schwartz's Aspergers: Independence Day; Lara Rae's Fragments and a whole bunch more.
Cover is only $5 and all the proceeds from the show will go to Art City, which does art programming for kids in West Broadway and is just an overall really magical place.
There's limited space and no tickets are being sold in advance, so go early if you want to get in!
WHAT: ART — Evan Sabourin: Elsewhere
When: Saturday, July 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: La Maison des artistes visuels francophones at 219 Provencher Blvd.
Cost: FREE
The exhibition Evan Sabourin: Elsewhere opened this week at La Maison des artistes visuels francophones in St. Boniface.
Sabourin was a Manitoba-born artist who passed away last year, and the show is a collection of his paintings, drawings, comics, wood sculptures and more.
The work touches on loss, politics, addiction, recovery and self-help, with works from the 1990s through to the 2010s.
If you can't catch it this weekend, the show will run until Aug. 26.
WHAT: DRINKS — Barn Hammer turns 1
When: Saturday, July 15, from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Where: Barn Hammer Brewing Co. at 595 Wall St.
Barn Hammer Brewing Co. is celebrating one year in business with a big parking lot party at their Wall Street brewery.
On Saturday, they'll have Mama Cutsworth DJing, the Kyu Grill food truck on site and a whole bunch of small batch beer to try.
There will be games, prizes, very nice people and "likely some cake."
Call your cab home in advance!
Out of town …
WHAT: FAMILY STUFF — St-Pierre-Jolys Frog Follies
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Where: St-Pierre-Jolys, Man.
Cost: FREE to $5
If you feel like leaving the city this weekend, you can check out some people race frogs in St-Pierre-Jolys.
Their annual Frog Follies are on again this weekend.
They'll have three days of stuff including a pancake breakfast, a parade, barbecues, a petting zoo, movies, tons of music and, of course, frog races.
Micah Erenberg and Richard Inman are both set to play the festival and it'll be worth catching their sets if you go.
Also there will be a "VIP" frog race so please, if you go, Instagram and snap liberally.
