Hang in there: Sweltering temperatures expected to continue all weekend in southern Manitoba

The sun is beating down on southern Manitoba Saturday as a heat warning is again in effect.

The sweltering temperatures are expected to hit highs in the 33 to 35 C range — without factoring in the humidity, which will make it feel closer to 40 this afternoon.

This is the second day of hot and humid conditions due to a ridge of high pressure, according to CBC meteorologist John Sauder. Those conditions are expected to last throughout the weekend.

It was a scorching hot day Saturday in Manitoba. The province is the latest to be impacted by a heat wave that's going through some parts of the country. CBC's Austin Grabish has more from Winnipeg.

Environment Canada, which issued the heat warning, is advising people to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks from the 30-degree conditions inside cooled buildings.

With the heat likely to continue into the early evening, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers issued their own advisory on Saturday. The CFL team cautioned fans coming to Investors Group Field for their game against the B.C. Lions to stay hydrated, watch for symptoms of heat stroke and wear light, loose-fitting clothing and sunscreen.

To stay hydrated during the game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., the Bombers said fans can bring into the stadium sealed plastic water bottles up to one litre or empty water bottles to be filled at fountains in the stadium.

Fans at the game could have more than hot weather to contend with, according to Environment Canada. The muggy conditions may give way to strong thunderstorms later in the day, the weather agency reports.

As of Saturday morning, the Island Lake area was under a severe thunderstorm watch.
