Passenger thrown from vehicle in rollover near Richer dies

A backseat passenger who was thrown from a vehicle during a rollover northeast of Steinbach Wednesday morning has died, RCMP say.

A passenger who was thrown from a vehicle during a rollover northeast of Steinbach Wednesday morning has died, RCMP say.

Police received a call just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday about a single-vehicle rollover one kilometre east of Richer, Man. STARS air ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.

A westbound vehicle crossed into a ditch and flipped several times in the process, Sgt. Bert Paquet said.

 A 23-year-old man in the back seat was thrown from the vehicle as it tumbled and rolled.

He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said.

The driver and a second passenger were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation has revealed speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, RCMP said.

A stretch of the Trans-Canada near the crash site was closed for about four hours ending around 10 a.m.

Richer is 22 kilometres northeast of Steinbach and 56 kilometres east of Winnipeg.
