Shooting, stabbing incidents in north Winnipeg just hours apart send 2 men to hospital

Two men were rushed to hospital after a stabbing and a shooting that happened just hours apart, and on the same street, in north Winnipeg.

Police were called to an area near the corner of McGregor Street and Selkirk Avenue, in the William Whyte neighbourhood, with a report of a stabbing around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release.

Kevin Walker, head of the Bear Clan Patrol, told CBC News a member of the volunteer safety group came across the injured man and helped him into a nearby store until police arrived.

The 29-year-old man had "a severe upper-body injury," police said on Friday. Officers applied a tourniquet and he was taken to hospital.

They believe the man was attacked one block south, on Flora Street, by another man before making his way to Selkirk for help.

A few hours later — around 3 a.m. Friday — police were called to Flora and Salter Street with a report of another injured man. A 26-year-old man was found with a gunshot to the upper body, police said in the release.

Officers applied a tourniquet and the man was rushed to hospital.

They believe he was shot somewhere in 400 block of Flora and then made his way to the corner at Salter to get help.

In both cases, the men were listed in unstable condition when taken to hospital, but were later upgraded to stable.

Police said at this point, the two incidents do not appear to be related.

No arrests have been made in either case. Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call police at 204-986-6219 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
