A grocery store employee in Winnipeg was rushed to hospital Wednesday after being stabbed by a man who was shoplifting, police say.

The man went into the No Frills store at Notre Dame Avenue and Langside Street on Wednesday night, picked up several items and headed straight to the exit.

On the way out, he confronted a female employee and stabbed her in the upper body, said police, who were called around 8:45 p.m.

Officers provided emergency care to the woman, who was sent to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

The man ran from the store before police arrived.

He is described as six feet tall, with a thin build and medium-length hair. He was wearing glasses, a dark grey hooded sweatshirt and blue puffy vest at the time.
