St. Vital man lured 11 kids to pool, secretly recorded them in bathroom, police say

Winnipeg police say a St. Vital man used his backyard pool to lure kids and then secretly record them in his bathroom as they changed into their swimsuits.

Suspect had several cameras in bathroom, taped victims over 7 year period, police allege

Winnipeg police say a St. Vital man used his backyard pool to lure kids and then secretly record them in his bathroom as they changed into their swimsuits.

Police found several recording devices hidden in the bathroom of the 53-year-old suspect who was first arrested after an internet investigation last year.

Constable Jason Michalyshen says a search of the man's home found reams of video of 13 people, including 11 children, dating back to 2007.

"This individual had a huge amount of videos that we had to sift through over a long period of time. Obviously these recordings took place over a seven-year period."

Michalyshen says police believe the children range in age from eight to 13 years old and are trying to identify the victims.

"Individuals were invited to the residence to ... use the pool. These could be friends, these could be people in the neighbourhood.  We don't know for sure at this point. We are obviously moving forward with respect to specifically identifying the victims," he says.

He says there is a lot of material to go through.

"We located large quantity of devices that were ultimately seized.  Since that time we've been sifting through those devices ... painstakingly."

The suspect is facing 13 charges of voyeurism, and 11 charges of making, publishing or possessing child pornography.

Police said their investigation is continuing.
