Winnipeg's St. Vital area will be the next neighbourhood to get Canada Post community mailboxes.

As was the case with the introduction of community mailboxes in the northwest part of Winnipeg this fall, some St. Vital residents are displeased while others seem unfazed with the move away from door to door service.

"The only thing we're guaranteed in life is change, so this is just another change," said St. Vital resident Rick Walls.

In total, the move to community boxes will impact roughly 12,000 residential addresses and 70 businesses in Winnipeg in 2014. Another 16,000 homes and businesses with the postal codes R2M and R2N will be moving to the new system by the second of half of 2015.

The Canadian Union for Postal Workers (CUPW) said this latest roll out stings, because Canada Post is reporting a $39 million profit for 2014.

"It shocks and appalls that the crown corporation is, despite the fact that it's made changes and has turned around its financial situation to turn a profit, it wants to continue to decimate public services to Canadians," said Ben Zorn, CUPW president.

The union alleged the latest move to community mailboxes could impact 20 mail-carrier jobs in the St. Vital area alone. Meanwhile, Canada Post maintains the only jobs that will be lost will be through attrition.
