St. Andrews Community Club treasurer charged with theft and fraud
53-year-old woman from RM of St. Andrews will appear in court in May
A 53-year-old woman has been charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars and fraud for allegedly making a false entry on a ledger during her decade-long tenure as treasurer of the St. Andrews Community Club.
"Any money that goes missing affects the club, that's for sure," said Kurt Procter, president of the club.
Selkirk RCMP started investigating in May 2015 after suspicions were raised at the club about mismanagement of its money.
"At our last couple of AGMs, the current board found large, irregular payments on credit cards, and cheques that had no support and couldn't be accounted for," said Procter.
The board compiled their information and gave it to the RCMP last year. The RCMP launched an investigation, which led to two searches this past weekend.
The woman, a resident of the rural municipality of St. Andrews, was released on a recognizance and promises to appear in provincial court in Selkirk in May.
Procter said the club now makes sure every penny is accounted for and proofs of purchases are required before people are reimbursed.
