Construction has started on the Sherbrook Pool to bring it up to modern day standards and fix structural issues.

The pool was closed in 2012 after the city found structural concerns in the more than 80-year-old building.

Many people in the city's core area raised the alarm when the pool closed, leaving a gap in local services.

The city and the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg are pitching in $4 million for the renovations and upgrades.

The city says the first work to be done on the building is repairing the roof.

It says repairs are expected to take six to nine months.

The hope is to re-open the facility early next year.
