Sheila North Wilson officially launches bid for MKO grand chief
Winnipeg journalist seeks top job at Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak
Winnipeg journalist Sheila North Wilson has officially launched her campaign to become grand chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak.
North Wilson, a former CBC Manitoba reporter who is on leave from her job at CTV Winnipeg, made a formal announcement on Thursday afternoon.
MKO is a non-profit political advocacy organization which represents 30 First Nations in the province's north.
The MKO election takes place Sept. 2 in Nelson House, Man. All chiefs, headmen and councillors of member First Nations are eligible to vote.
North Wilson, who is from the Bunibonibee Cree Nation, will be running against 19-year-old Tyler Duncan of Norway House Cree Nation.
Earlier this week, current MKO Grand Chief David Harper told CBC News he is considering whether to seek a third term.
