Road so bad, speed limit needs lowering: councillor

A Winnipeg city councillor is asking for the speed limit to be lowered on a stretch of road in the city's east end that he says has become dangerous.

Coun. Russ Wyatt says the stretch of Dugald Road between Plessis Road and Lagimodiere Boulevard is in such bad shape it is dangerous for people to drive the speed limit, currently 70 km/h.

"It's very bad. It's, like, two kilometres of heaving in the joints," he said. "I drive a 2007 Toyota Camry and I can't do the speed limit."

Wyatt has asked the city's infrastructure committee to move as quickly as possible to reduce the speed limit on the three-kilometre stretch for safety's sake. If speeds aren't reduced, he said, he fears someone will lose control on the stretch and have a serious crash.

The city has deferred infrastructure work for too long, and Winnipeggers are now paying the price in road conditions, he said.

"By not being able to get access to other sources of funding, we're allowing our … infrastructure deficit to get out of control," he said.

"It's not a problem of 'this is how it always has been.' It always hasn't been this way, if you go back many years. We've just allowed it to get this way."
