Rescue team heartbroken after 3-pawed Solo dies

A surgery, which Manitoba Underdogs Rescue launched a public fundraiser for, has claimed the life of the dog the group was trying to save.

The young dog died from anesthesia complications during a surgery to amputate leg, says the group

Solo, a four-month-old shepherd-cross, died after a surgery to amputate an infected leg, said Manitoba Underdogs Rescue in a Facebook post lateTuesday.

"The Underdogs team is heartbroken," it said.

Solo's leg became diseased after her paw was chewed off, possibly by the puppy's mother. A public fundraiser was launched earlier in December to pay for a surgery to remove the infected limb.

While the amputation went well, said Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, Solo's heart rate began to slow after she was taken off oxygen.

It's believed the puppy died as a result of a reaction to the anesthesia.

"We are confident that the hospital did absolutely everything in their power to save Solo," the group said.

The remaining funds leftover from Solo's surgery will go toward paying for a spay and neuter community clinic in a northern community in honour of Solo, said Manitoba Underdogs Rescue.

The group thanks everyone who donated and ended their update with this message:

"Rest easy and play hard, little Solo. You were so very loved."
