RCMP officer shot west of Brandon
One man arrested after the incident
An RCMP officer is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after a shooting 10 kilometres west of Brandon, Man. on Friday.
One witness told CBC News a large police presence formed at a home in Kemnay, Man. shortly before 7 p.m. The witness said they heard two shots fired at about 7:30 p.m. and later saw a man in handcuffs being arrested by police.
Karen Bouchard says officers banged on the back door.
"Police were yelling at us at the back of the house to open up the patio door and then they told us to get to the basement. That they were being shot at and not to come upstairs until they let us know it was safe."
Bouchard says she and others who live in the house were scared to look out the window.
"We did happen to peek out once and we did see an officer walk by the window with a rifle. So we did lay low and just waited for them to come to the door and say that everything was OK."
Another Kemnay resident told CBC News roads were closed in the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 1A area intersection around 7:30 p.m.
Eric Olsen was on his way home when RCMP stopped him at the intersection. He said they told him there was an armed standoff between officers and a man with a high-powered rifle inside a home nearby.
Olsen said RCMP let him go home though the area at around 8:30 p.m.
RCMP will only say the injured officer's injuries are non-life threatening.
One individual was taken into custody.
