Pup poisoned: Winnipegger warns neighbours after dog eats meat laced with pills
Aero the dog chowed down on acetaminophen, ibuprofen and clonazepam
Aero the dog runs a little bit slower in his backyard in the East Kildonan area. The four-year-old border collie cross' future is still uncertain after he chowed down on meat laced with pills, including one used to treat seizures.
Aero's owner, Ashley Loughery, was bringing her dogs out into the yard on Monday when she said she saw some kids on bicycles ride up to her fence.
"The dogs ran to the fence and they threw chunks of meat over," she said.
"I ran to my dog because he's kind of a garbage gut so he is going to eat anything that comes over the fence."
Aero quickly scarfed down two pieces of the meat but Loughery was able to get the third one away.
"There were just a ton of pills inside," she said.
Aero was treated at the vet for three nights. The dog now needs to be on several medications and requires weekly blood work.
Loughery said she will find out next week if the dog will live with chronic kidney disease or if the pup has kidney failure and needs to be euthanized.
"It's been tough. It's been really tough," Loughery said.
"[I feel] a lot of anger, frustration and a lot of hurt too. I mean I'm sure that this isn't going to be the only time that this is going to happen."
Aero has competed and won as a disc dog, however Loughery said the usually bubbly hound has changed.
"[He] doesn't really have an appetite and sleeps most of the time," she said.
Loughery said she has reported the incident to animal services but she wants her neighbours to stay vigilant. She also started a GoFundMe to help with the veterinarian bills.
