The province is set to release more water from the Shellmouth Reservoir to decrease water flow along the Assiniboine River, the Hydrologic Forecast Centre of Manitoba said on Thursday.

Outflow from the dam will increase from its present flow of 1,900 cubic feet per second (CFS) to 3,000 CFS, a provincial news release said.

Water will rise about 2 to 3 feet between Shellmouth Dam and St. Lazare, Man., the province estimated.

"The higher outflows will result in some overbank flooding along the upper Assiniboine River and will result in some flooding of agricultural land between the reservoir and St. Lazare," said the release.

Water is expected to crest between Brandon and the Shellmouth Dam the first week of May.
