Proposed Academy Road clinic approved by Winnipeg's property committee
Shane Silver's plan to build dermatology clinic irks some River Heights residents
A Winnipeg doctor's plan to build a dermatology clinic on Academy Road has cleared another hurdle at city hall, despite ongoing opposition from some area residents.
The city's property and development committee approved a zoning agreement on Tuesday for Shane Silver's 3,300-square-foot clinic proposed for 500 Academy Rd. in River Heights.
The project still needs to go through Winnipeg's executive policy committee and, if approved at that level, council as a whole.
The property and development committee's approval follows a similar decision by the city centre community committee, which gave the project the green light in July.
River Heights residents have been divided over the plan, with some supporting construction of the clinic and others opposing it.
Those opposed believe the building will impact the character of neighbourhood, create parking issues and force trees to be removed.
Lindsey Steek, whose design firm is next to where it will be built, worries about the impact the clinic might have on traffic and parking in the area.
City council turned down the project last year after area residents appealed.
At the July meeting, Silver said he revamped his proposal to better fit property requirements and the needs of the community.
