Ontario Provincial Police shut down Minaki detachment
Modern technology has turned OPP cruisers into mobile offices
The Minaki detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is being closed down.
The OPP said the decision was made "following a detachment strategic review". The detachment will close June 23 and the lease on the building is set to expire on June 30.
The community, near the Ontario-Manitoba border, is mainly populated by tourists and cottagers. The largest group of cottagers are from Winnipeg, about a 3½-hour drive away.
"The OPP would like to reassure community members that the local area will continue to receive policing from the host OPP detachment in Kenora, with no change in detachment boundaries or service," stated a news release.
Modern technology has turned OPP cruisers into mobile offices, anyway, enabling officers to be more actively engaged in the community, the release stated.
"The OPP is confident that service for the citizens of the Minaki area will not be adversely affected by this closure."
The OPP can be reached at 1-888-310-1122 or 911 in an emergency.
