Official made wrong call in Bombers' loss to Stampeders, CFL says
League says illegal procedure call in final moments of play had 'a significant impact on the game'
The CFL is admitting an official made a wrong call in a game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Calgary Stampeders.
The Stampeders eked out a 25-23 win against the Blue and Gold at Winnipeg's Investors Group Field Friday night.
The Bombers had a chance to tie the score but were slapped with a procedural penalty near the end of the game.
Glen Johnson, CFL vice-president of officiating, released a statement Saturday afternoon claiming the official made the wrong call.
"Near the conclusion of last night's game ... an illegal procedure call had a significant impact on the game," said Johnson, adding a review was conducted and the official who made the call is being disciplined.
Wade Miller, Winnipeg Blue Bombers president and CEO, said that despite actions taken by the league, the organization still isn't happy the call may have influenced the outcome of the game.
"We're deeply disappointed in what happened last night regarding the officiating error, as acknowledged by the league," Miller said Saturday in a statement.
"While we understand that mistakes happen, it is extremely frustrating for our organization, and our fans, that it occurred at such a crucial point in the game and our season."
The Bombers take on the Edmonton Eskimos on Oct. 3 in Winnipeg.
