Nearly blinded rescue dog Percy to be treated in Saskatoon
Donors raise $5K for injured Winnipeg dog's eye surgery
Percy, the puppy nearly blinded after his owner's child rubbed hair dye in his eyes, is gearing up for a trip to Saskatoon for surgery, the rescue group looking after his welfare said on Thursday.
Now aged nine months, Percy, was flown to Winnipeg in February after being seized by the RCMP in a northern community. He was placed in the care of Manitoba Underdogs Rescue.
"Percy was originally scheduled to go to the University of Saskatoon for eye surgery this week, but we've had to reschedule," Manitoba Underdogs Executive Director Jessica Hansen said in a statement.
"Because of everything he's been through, he's having a few issues adjusting to his new challenges. We want to make sure that he's 100% ready for his surgery and the recovery that it will require. He isn't in any pain at this point and we're going to keep him happy and comfortable until he's ready to go to Saskatoon."
Percy, a lively border collie/Jack Russell cross, has been diagnosed with corneal endothelial dystrophy, a condition that causes thickening of the cornea and fluid build-up within the eye. If left untreated, it will cause extreme pain and total blindness.
Donors have come forward to provide the $5,000 for the surgery and treatment that Percy requires.
"We were completely blown away," Hansen said. "We hope that everyone knows just how much we appreciate their help and support. It's overwhelming!"
Postings on a Facebook account set up for Percy say the puppy is able to see as his right eye has cleared up and describe how he recovered from a bout of pancreatitis this month. Percy is described as "the spunkiest and happiest pup around",
Manitoba Underdogs says Percy remains on four medications to manage his condition and reduce any pain or discomfort. He has weekly visits to the vet to monitor his overall health and condition.
