3 mushers missing in northern Manitoba storm
Teenager, 2 adults last seen 36 hours ago when they left for a dog sled race
Three mushers — including a teenager — travelling by vehicle to a remote dog sled race from the northern Manitoba city of Thompson have not been heard from in the past 36 hours as blizzard conditions continue sweeping through the area.
"It's just scary," Pam Froelich told CBC News Wednesday. "Lots of other dog mushers have tried calling them and there's no answer. They haven't been on their Facebook or anything."
Her 14-year-old son, Ryley Froelich, left Thompson with two adult mushers and roughly 30 dogs on Monday evening to drive to the dog sled race in Brochet.
The group is travelling in a green truck and have not been seen or heard from since their departure, Froelich said. She said she doesn't believe there is cell service in the area.
More than 40 centimetres of snow has fallen on the Thompson region since Monday. Winds continue to gust 80-90 km/h.
The family had received word that someone on a snowmobile spotted several vehicles stranded on a highway outside of Leaf Rapids on Tuesday. Froelich said local RCMP officers went out on Skidoos to follow up but were hampered by the blizzard conditions.
"They couldn't make it more than five kilometres out of Leaf Rapids," she said. "They had to turn around because they couldn't see anything. It was too stormy."
