Inmate died days after force used in arrest, police watchdog says
Man cleared by doctor after Aug. 9 arrest but died four days later
A man died on Aug. 13, four days after police "used force" in his arrest and processing, the Independent Investigation Unit says.
The man was arrested on Aug. 9 and the IIU was told by the Winnipeg Police Service that "officers had used force in the course of arresting and processing" him, a news release from the police watchdog said.
During processing, the man complained of sore ribs, police said. He was taken to hospital by officers.
Doctors cleared the man to return to the Winnipeg Remand Centre, where he was held in custody.
Two days later, he was again taken to hospital from the remand centre. He died in hospital on Aug. 13.
Police informed the Independent Investigation Unit about the death on Aug. 16 and an investigative team was dispatched.
"As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission," the news release said.
