The Manitoba government is following the lead of other provinces in banning children from commercial tanning beds.

A bill now before the legislature would also forbid tanning salons from advertising to children.

Healthy Living Minister Deanne Crothers says exposure to artificial ultraviolet light is known to increase the risk of skin cancer.

The bill would also require commercial tanning salons to provide customers with protective eyewear.

The bill is expected to be passed into law next spring.
