The body of a man has been found in the Red River north of Winnipeg this afternoon, but RCMP say the discovery is not related to the Drag the Red initiative in the city.

Selkirk RCMP were called to the river just north of Lockport, Man., at around 2 p.m. Thursday.

Police initially did not release any details about the identity of the deceased, citing "the effects of water," but later confirmed that the the body is that of an adult male.

The case is under investigation.

RCMP stressed that incident is not part of Drag the Red, a project in which volunteers are scouring the river and shorelines for the remains of missing and murdered indigenous women or possible evidence in their cases.

Drag the Red boats officially began dragging the river on Wednesday. The search continues Thursday.
