A man assaulted in a Winnipeg motel last month has died, leading to second-degree murder charges against another man.

Darcy Jerome Beardy, 29, was initially charged with aggravated assault after George Gabriel Flett, 51, was found critically injured at the motel on Westwood Drive.

Flett was a guest at the hotel and was assaulted in his room sometime during the night of Dec. 10, police said. He was found the next morning and rushed to hospital.

Beardy was identified as the suspect and arrested on Dec. 22. He was later released from custody.

When Flett died Jan. 5, police issued a warrant for Beardy's arrest on second-degree murder charges.

Beardy was located and taken into custody on Wednesday.

Both men are from the northern Manitoba community of St. Theresa Point, police said.
