RCMP are warning the public that warming temperatures mean it is no longer safe to be out on the ice, especially in a vehicle, after they had to rescue a man and woman stranded on Lake Winnipeg.

The man, 41, and a 40-year-old woman were headed to their regular fishing spot in an SUV around 7:30 a.m. Sunday when, without warning, the vehicle began to sink, police said in a news release.

They managed to get out safely but were stranded on the ice. They kept in touch with police via cell phone, directing officers while watching for an RCMP vehicle's emergency lights.

Officers had to be extremely careful while travelling over the ice due to open water in some places, the release said. They stopped short of where the man and woman were standing, due to the thin ice.

Officers had the pair walk toward them, then transported them off the ice. They were not injured.

A tow company was able to recover the SUV.
