A Winnipeg man who abducted his two children and hid them in Mexico for four years has pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Shortly before his scheduled court appearance on Monday, Kevin Maryk entered a guilty plea to one count of sexual assault that occurred between January 1, 2002 and May 30, 2006.

Maryk previously pleaded guilty to two counts of abduction in 2014, and was sentenced to four years in prison, which was later reduced to 374 days.

The children went missing after a two-week court approved vacation with their father in August 2008. The children were later found in a townhouse complex in Guadalajara, Mexico in May 2012.

Maryk was also charged with uttering threats and living off the avails of prostitution, but those charges were dropped as part of Monday's guilty plea.

Sentencing for the assault charge is set to take place on Sept. 27.

Maryk's lawyer, Todd Bourcier says there will be a joint recommendation for a sentence of two years less one day owing to his pre-trial custody.
