Guiboche's family has 'faith' in finding closure after new cases taken on by missing and murdered task force
Project Devote adds 2 historical cases
The family of Amber Guiboche is hopeful they will get answers about their sister's disappearance after the case was taken on by Project Devote, a joint task force between RCMP and Winnipeg police, six years after she went missing.
"My family has a lot of faith in Project Devote," said Ashley Geddes, Guiboche's sister.
"They made it clear they only want to bring closure and I truly believe them."
Guiboche's case is one of two new cases taken on by the project. Guiboche was last seen on November 10, 2010 in the area of William Avenue and Isabel Street. She was 20 years old at the time.
Geddes says it's been hard on her family to not have answers about what happened to their sister in the six years since she went missing. A vigil was held on Monday to renew calls for information about her case.
"Not seeing or hearing from her is really hard," Geddes said. "It makes you have so many different emotions at same same time."
Geddes hopes a fresh look at the case might bring new leads.
Recently, RCMP added Guiboche's case, and the investigation into the disappearance of Tiffany Skye, to Project Devote. The joint task force between RCMP and the Winnipeg Police Service focuses on historical homicides and disappearances of exploited Manitobans.
Skye's body was found in the Red River near the Lockport dam north of Winnipeg on August 13, 2011. Skye, 19, was last seen in the area of The Forks or downtown Winnipeg on August 8, 2011.
Just last Wednesday, Project Devote task force members executed a search warrant on Selkirk Avenue in connection to a case.
At the time of the search, Winnipeg police spokesman Jason Michalyshen told media the task force had 28 cases in its portfolio and could not disclose which case the warrant was connected to.
An RCMP spokesperson confirmed in an email this week that Project Devote is now looking at 30 cases. RCMP said they wanted to reach family members of those victims before making media aware that cases were added to Project Devote.
The RCMP would not say exactly when these cases were added to Project Devote, only that it was recent. A request to speak to task force members about why these cases were added was denied.
Project Devote was created in 2012 and focused on 28 cases, dating back to 1961.
Since Project Devote began, one case has been resolved. Traigo Andretti pleaded guilty to the murder of Myrna Letandre last year.
The case of Amanda Bartlett, who disappeared in 1996, was also added to the list in 2012.
