Things will be much cooler this summer at Greendell Park Community Centre, thanks to some much-needed upgrades.

"My sons were at a summer camp here a couple of summers ago and are excited that now it's going to be a little more livable in the summer," St. Vital Coun. Brian Mayes said at a news conference on Monday morning that announced upgrades to the building, including installation of air conditioning.

Improvements to the 70-year-old community centre include:

  • A new electrical distribution system for the facility.
  • A new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in the office, board rooms, lobby, kitchen and gymnasium.
  • A new ventilation system in the daycare and dressing rooms.
  • A new suspended ceiling in the lobby.

"Greendell Park Community Centre is a neighbourhood destination and a family tradition in St. Vital," said Mayes. "These facility upgrades will ensure that families can participate in recreation activities in a comfortable building for years to come."

The community centre welcomes approximately 45,000 people through its doors each year.

"It's really vital that we have strong, vibrant community centres that can continue to be the hub for the community," said Sport, Heritage and Culture Minister Rochelle Squires.

Provincial funding for the Greendell Park Community Centre is provided through the Manitoba/Winnipeg Infrastructure Agreement, a six-year, $220-million provincial capital funding program providing support for Winnipeg transportation and community recreation infrastructure.

The project, which started in mid-February, is expected to be completed this summer.
