Winnipeggers who shunned their vehicles in favour of a green commute on Wednesday were being rewarded with treats and a chance to win prizes.

The Green Action Centre hosted two Clean Air Day events as part of National Environmental Week and the annual Commuter Challenge.

  • On the Osborne Street Bridge, at Assiniboine Avenue, from 6:30 a.m. until 9 a.m.
  • At Assiniboine Park's Lyric Theatre from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Members on the bridge handed out free coffee and donuts for anyone choosing a green commute — cycling, skateboarding, in-line skating, walking, running.

Free bicycle tune-ups were also offered to anyone pedaling their way to work.

Clean Air Day on the Bridge is our way of celebrating Manitobans who choose ways to commute that are better for people and the planet," a news release from the Green Action Centre said.

Commuter Challenge participants are encouraged to log their kilometres throughout the week for a chance to win prizes.

Each participant to register at least one green commute throughout the challenge from June 4 – 10 is eligible.

The event at the Lyric Theatre is expected to draw 500 students from across Winnipeg to wrap up Bike to School Month.

"The event is a fun filled day for all schools that includes exciting stations, interactive demonstrations and ends the day with a bike parade around Assiniboine Park," the Green Action Centre news release states.
