France names Winnipeg veteran as Knight of the Legion of Honour

A Second World War veteran from Winnipeg is being honoured by France for his contribution in liberating the country.

Jack Tennant, who served on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in 1944, is being named a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour.

The honour, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is considered one of the top national honours by the French government.

Tennant, 91, knew he had been nominated but just got the official letter and medal a couple of weeks ago.

“It means a lot. It's something that helps you remember what happened on D-Day — how you behaved, what happened, who you met,” he said.

An official ceremony to celebrate the medal with his family will happen at the end of the month.
