Mother of Ana Marquez-Greene attends Barack Obama’s Washington gun-control speech
A former Winnipegger is going to Washington to help bolster U.S. President Barack Obama’s gun control campaign.
Nelba Marquez-Greene lost her six-year-old daughter Ana when she was shot at an elementary school in Connecticut in December.Obama brought 11 relatives who lost children or loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting to Washington, where gun control is being discussed this week.
The relatives listened to Obama speak in Hartford, Conn. before flying to Washington to personally encourage senators to back gun control legislation.
White House officials said Obama will argue lawmakers have an obligation to victims of gun violence to allow a vote in senate on the controversial legislation.
The legislation calls for background checks, increased gun trafficking penalties and a limit on the size of ammunition magazines. The Sandy Hook families are expected to speak directly to senators who have not yet supported the legislation.
Marquez-Greene was among six relatives who were flown out to the meetings via Air Force One.
