The files of two well-known Manitoba senators are being handed over to the RCMP as part of a sweeping look at senate expenses by auditor general Michael Ferguson.
Retired Liberal senators from Manitoba among 21 named in senate spending audit for making questionable claims
CBC has confirmed retired Liberal senators from Manitoba Sharon Carstairs and Rod Zimmer will have their files turned over to the RCMP in a sweeping examination of senate expenses.
The report by auditor general Michael Ferguson found 21 senators had made questionable expense claims.
Nine, including Carstairs and Zimmer, were deemed serious enough to have their files given to the RCMP for further investigation.
Carstairs, who has been critical of the senate expense scandal saying Prime Minister Stephen Harper had no one to blame but himself for it, finds herself now caught up in it.
Carstairs was appointed to the senate by former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Zimmer was appointed by Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin.
Both are retired.
