Wildfire burns at Winnipeg's Assiniboine Forest
Homes, businesses evacuated as a precaution
A wildfire burning through a section of Winnipeg's Assiniboine Forest kept firefighters busy Saturday evening.
Crews were called to the fire in the west side of the urban forest, behind Pacific Junction School, around 4:30 p.m.
In a release sent to media late Saturday the city said it appears the fire started in the interior of the forest, and rail traffic is not believed to be a factor in the fire.
A number of homes on Woodchester Bay, Woodfield Bay, and Woodview Bay, as well as a nearby business, were evacuated as a precaution.
Crews worked to protect the homes threatened by fire, as wind conditions allowed the fire to spread quickly.
No injuries were reported and homeowners were allowed back into their homes around 8:20 p.m.
Crews were expected to remain on scene throughout the night Saturday and into Sunday morning.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews are currently on scene of a wildfire in the west side of Assiniboine Forest. Residents are advised to avoid the area.
