Two people have been charged after Brandon police found nine kilograms of fentanyl — with an estimated street value of $1.1 million — during a traffic stop near Brandon.

Brandon police and Manitoba RCMP found the fentanyl last Thursday, when they stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation at about 11:30 a.m., Brandon police said in a statement Tuesday.

The vehicle was stopped about five kilometres west of Brandon while police were conducting a traffic enforcement initiative on the Trans-Canada Highway in and around Brandon, police say.

Officers searched the vehicle, which had a Manitoba license plate, and found a bag of fentanyl inside.

A 27-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman are charged with possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking. They were scheduled to make their first court appearance on Friday.
