Group holds 24-hour vigil for inmate who died at Winnipeg Remand Centre
Bradley Errol Greene, 26, died after having epileptic seizure while in custody at centre in May
A 24-hour vigil for a man who died at the Winnipeg Remand Centre took place Tuesday.
Bradley Errol Greene died May 1 while in custody at the pre-trial detention centre. The 26-year-old was speaking with his wife, Rochelle Pranteau, on the phone when he went into an epileptic seizure and later died.
Three months since her husband's death, Pranteau says she still doesn't have answers about why Greene was unable to be saved.
"I was actually devastated when I got the call," she said. "They called me … later on that night after he was gone, around 9 p.m., and they just said, 'We're sorry for [your] loss,' and he was at the hospital."
In May, CBC News spoke with several inmates at the remand centre who said Greene was heard calling for help from a cell before he went silent on the day he died.
Greene was being detained for breaching a probation order not to consume alcohol. At the time, he was under the probation order for a charge of mischief under $5,000.
Greene was taken into custody April 29. He reportedly told Pranteau he had been denied medication for his epilepsy for three days and was scared that could continue.
Pranteau said she feels the vigil will help keep the story about what happened to her husband present in people's minds.
"[I'm] not going to stop and I'm going to get justice served, hopefully," she said. "I guess I'm going to have to go through the justice system to fight them to get my answers."
The vigil for Greene ran from 2 p.m. Tuesday to 2 p.m. Wednesday outside the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
