A 33-year-old man and 35-year-old woman are dead after a double homicide in Winnipeg on the weekend.

Police were called around 4:15 a.m. Saturday to a home on Alfred Avenue, off Aikins Street, about a woman who had been shot.

When they arrived, they found an injured man outside the house as well. The woman was located inside. Both had been shot, a spokesperson said.

Emergency medical care was provided before the victims were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Both have since died, police said in a news release on Monday.

They have been identified as Sheldon Derrach Catcheway, 33, and Shanastene Irene McLeod, 35.

Catcheway was a member of Swan Lake First Nation and living in Winnipeg. McLeod was a member of Muskowekwan First Nation in Saskatchewan, and living in Winnipeg.

'They took someone very special away'

Friends and family of McLeod gathered at a residence near the place where the 35-year-old was killed Monday afternoon to light a sacred fire in her memory.

McLeod's parents, Helen McLeod and David Beauchamp, said their daughter was an outgoing person loved by many, but that she'd been struggling with drug addiction on-and-off for many years.

Helen said Shanastene was working to get her life back on track, and they thought she was "really going to make it" this time before her life was cut short.

"She was really trying hard to stay on a good path," Helen said. "Get her kids back, she was working towards that. She was doing programs."

The parents said McLeod had six children, including a baby only 18 months old. Three of them are in their care.

"They took someone very special away," Helen said. "Her kids are struggling really hard with it — and so are we. My baby. That was my only daughter."

No arrests have been made. No further information has been provided by police.
