Stolen car crashes into Canada Post truck and convenience store
Driver of car sent to hospital in critical condition while Canada Post driver not seriously hurt
It happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Selkirk Avenue and Parr Street in the city's North End.
The truck and a car collided and then both ended up against a convenience store on the corner. The car crashed into the front of the building while the truck hit a lamppost and tipped sideways into the corner of the building.
The driver of the car has since been upgraded to stable condition while the 57-year-old Canada Post driver had minor injuries, according to police.
Barbara Jacobs, who lives in an apartment block attached to the back of the store, was one of the first people to run out to the crash scene.
She said the man in the postal truck was trying to climb out so she and another witness helped him out. He had a gash on his arm and some bruises but was otherwise OK.
It was only after the driver was out that Jacobs realized there was another vehicle. The man inside the car was in far worse shape with his body contorted across the front seats.
"He was trying to breathe so hard I just stood there in fear that he was going to die right in front of me," said Jacobs, who called her landlord, who owns the store, while her husband called 911.
Selkirk was closed between Arlington Street and McKenzie Street for several hours but reopened at 7:30 a.m.
