The Independent Investigation Unit has taken over the probe into the incident, IIU spokesperson Barbara Czech confirmed to CBC News Saturday.

Winnipeg police say they were responding to a suite in 182 Colony St. at 9:45 a.m. when a man was shot. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, police say, but later died.

A section of Colony Street, from Broadway to St. Mary Avenue, was cordoned off with police tape much of Saturday.

Marlita Berha lives in the building. She said when she left for work around 6:30 a.m., she didn't see anything unusual. But when she returned from her shift early Saturday afternoon, the building was taped off and she had to wait for police to allow her back in.

Berha said she's lived in the building for close to four months, and she's never felt unsafe there.

IIU investigators were seen entering the building around 2 p.m.

Saturday's shooting is the third shooting involving a Winnipeg police officer in 2019.
