Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem competes in 50-metre freestyle

Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem will compete in the 10th heat of the day Friday morning in Rio in the women's 50 metre freestyle.

Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem competed in the 10th Olympic heat of the women's 50-metre freestyle Friday morning in Rio.

The 50-metre freestyle event started at 11:02 a.m. CT. Van Landeghem qualified for the race with a time of 24.39 seconds.

Thus far, Team Canada has won five medals in swimming, including one gold, one silver and three bronze.

Van Landeghem was part of the bronze medal-winning women's relay team in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay.

The 22-year-old Winnipeg-born swimmer now lives and trains in Toronto.

She won gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games in the 100-metre freestyle relay and was named Manitoba Athlete of the Year in 2011.
