Canada Summer Games volunteers — 6,000 of them — needed in Winnipeg

The 2017 Canada Summer Games are still 11 months away, but the call is going out now to find volunteers.
Manitoba last hosted the Canada Summer Games in 1997, when they were in Brandon, but this will be the first time Winnipeg has had them. About 20,000 visitors are expected to attend during the two weeks of the event.

Tuesday is the kickoff for registering volunteers for the Games, which take place July 28 to Aug. 13, 2017.

Volunteers — 6,000 of them — are needed for everything from food services to transportation, said Laryssa Sawchuk, who heads up volunteer recruitment.

"It would be [a time commitment of] about 36 hours throughout that time period. So depending on the sport, it could be a variety of shifts at different lengths of time," she said.

The 2017 event marks the 50th anniversary of the Games, which were first held in 1967 in Quebec City as part of Canada's centennial celebrations.

Anyone who wants to help out is asked to register through the Canada Games website.
