A black bear that spent the day strolling through Charleswood on Saturday left the area unharmed later in the night.

A spokesperson for Manitoba Conservation said the bear came down from the tree it was in and left on its own after conservation and police officers spent most of the day watching the bear from below.

Conservation officers tracked the bear northwest of the Charleswood area along the Assiniboine River corridor until after midnight on Sunday, the spokesperson said Sunday morning.

The province estimated the animal to be two or three years old.

On Saturday morning, police went to the west Winnipeg neighbourhood after getting a call about the animal just before 10 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Rob Carver said.

Carver said as far as he knows, this is the first call of a bear in the city that Winnipeg police have received this spring.

The public is advised to stay clear of wild animals and report sightings to the provincial tip line at 1-800-782-0076 or the Winnipeg Police Service at 204-986-6222.
