Games of Olympia demonstration part of Winnipeg Art Gallery's Olympus exhibit

The Winnipeg Art Gallery will turn into an Olympian stadium of sorts this Sunday, with professional athletes competing in sports that date back to ancient Greek and Roman times.

Wrestling, long jump, discus and javelin will be among the sports that will be demonstrated on Sunday between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. as part of the gallery's Family Sunday series.

Guests can run a "mini-WAG marathon," snap selfies in the WAG chariot and even craft their own CBC victory shields.

CBC Manitoba's John Sauder and Trevor Dineen, along with Denis-Michel Thibeault of Radio-Canada Manitoba, will give play-by-play commentaries of the competitions. As well, Dineen will take part in a javelin competition (albeit with a javelin made of a pool noodle!).

The exhibit Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin has been on at the WAG since April 26, taking crowds back more than 2,000 years to the height of the Greco-Roman world.

Admission to Sunday's event will be $10 per family, consisting of up to two adults and four children under the age of 18. It's free of charge for WAG members.

Meanwhile, did you miss the Olympus-inspired Lego sculpture-building workshops at the WAG this summer? The WAG will be offering another workshop on Oct. 18.

As well, CBC Manitoba and ICI Manitoba present audio tours of the Olympus exhibit.
