Accused bomber Guido Amsel ordered not to contact ex-wife or Maria Mitousis
Amsel, 49, charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault
A judge has ordered accused Winnipeg bomber Guido Amsel to have no contact with two of his alleged targets — lawyer Maria Mitousis and his ex-wife Iris Amsel.
Crown prosecutor Samir Hassan outlined some of the allegations against Amsel when he applied for the order in a hearing on Tuesday.
"One of those devices ultimately was detonated by the victim, Ms. Mitousis, and resulted in a great degree of injuries
to her," Hassan said. "And the second of the other devices that he constructed was actually shipped to his wife's place of business. That device, thankfully, was not detonated at that point.
The Winnipeg police bomb unit took care of that one in a controlled detonation.
"For these reasons, obviously from the Crown's perspective, this individual should be precluded from having any form
of contact with these two complainants," Hassan said.
Amsel, 49, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault and several charges relating to the possession of explosives.
He has not retained a lawyer so far and has not indicated whether he will seek bail. Amsel, who appeared briefly in court via video link on Thursday, has also not entered pleas to the charges against him.
He remains in custody and is due back in court July 16.
Three women were the targets of the attacks last weekend before Amsel was arrested. Mitousis was seriously injured July 3 when a package sent to her office exploded.
A source who spoke to The Canadian Press on condition of anonymity said Mitousis lost one hand and was in danger of losing the other.
A package intended for Amsel's ex-wife was detonated by police Saturday at a business on Washington Avenue. No one was injured.
The third bomb was detonated by police near the law office of Orle Bargen and Davidson on Stradbrook Avenue on Sunday. The lawyer who represented him in the divorce proceedings used to work there but no longer does.
"The lawyer [Mitousis] that was targeted was his wife's lawyer and they were engaged in a divorce proceeding, so she was targeted for a specific reason and regrettably, he was successful in his efforts with respect to inflicting harm upon her," Hassan said in his application on Tuesday.
Rolston granted the request, ordering Amsel to have no contact with either of the two women, directly or through a third party, while he is in custody.
Rolston warned Amstel if he breached the order it could mean further criminal charges and affect his ability to get bail.
