5 things to do in Winnipeg during the FIFA lull in action
Here are some FIFA fan favourites to bide the time until the next FIFA game at 4 p.m. Friday
As tourists from around the world flood Winnipeg's streets for the FIFA Women's World Cup, they are inevitably looking for things to do between games.
Here are some of the city's activities that CBC has heard rave reviews about from the FIFA fans.
1. The Forks Market
The Forks is found downtown at the junction of Winnipeg's Assiniboine and Red rivers. In the city's history the area was used as a trading post for aboriginal people, European fur traders and Métis buffalo hunters.
You can find food, shopping and entertainment at the Forks between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. daily, open until 9 p.m. on Fridays.
While you're there, cross Main Street and check out the Upper Fort Gary Gate.
2. Fort Gibraltar
Take a trip down history lane to the early 1800s, when the North West Company built Fort Gibraltar as a post for their fur trading industry. Rebuilt several times over the years, the fort's main attraction these days is Winnipeg's winter festival, Festival du Voyageur – but historical tours are offered all year round.
The fort is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
3. Osborne Village
Just a few kilometres away from Winnipeg's downtown, Osborne Village offers a huge array of original storefronts and restaurants. Whether you're looking for brunch, baking or some vintage vinyl, you'll find what you're looking for in the Village.
4. Railway Museum
Found at the Via Rail Union Station, there are two tracks covered in locomotive history, including things like the first steam train to grace Canada's Prairies.
The museum is open on seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
5. Canadian Museum for Human Rights
See all of the national museum's 11 galleries revolving around different aspects of human rights history. While you're there, be sure to climb the Israel Asper Tower of Hope, so you can get a 360-degree view of Winnipeg's horizon.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., extended to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays.
