Man fined for killing animals
A Lloydminster resident has been fined for poisoning dozens of animals and birds.
In addition to killing 19 coyotes, 40 other animals, including six red foxes, two wolves, a snowy owl, two bald eagles, were found poisoned. The man laid out deer meat, covered with a poison called Furadan. Furadan is meant to be used in diluted form to kill beetles in crops. It is illegal to use as animal control.
Lloyd Moore discovered the animals and laid the charges against the man. He is a conservation officer with Sask Environment and Resource Management.
"I don't think his intentions were to poison all of these animals, I think his intentions were to get rid of his coyotes," says Moore. "And what happens with Furadan is the animals come and get poisoned and then the Furadan stays in their body and other ravens or magpies or eagles or whatever come and feed on those animals and get what we call secondary poisoning."
Moore says he was tipped off about the case by a woman who found a bald eagle she suspected was poisoned. The man was convicted of poisoning animals in two locations. One near Lloydminister and the other near Smeaton.
