WRPS officer charged with sexual assault after SIU investigation
17-year veteran of force suspended since allegations made in November, 2017
A Waterloo Regional Police Service officer has been charged with sexual assault and breach of trust following an investigation by the province's Special Investigation Unit.
Police said the charges result from an on-duty interaction in October 2017.
In its release, the SIU said it was contacted by Waterloo Regional Police on Nov. 10, 2017 after the force received a "complaint of a sexual nature" from a woman against a male officer.
The SIU said the alleged assault occurred in Kitchener on Oct. 26, 2017.
The officer, who is a 17-year veteran of the force, has been suspended since the allegations were made. He will appear in court in Kitchener on May 2.
"In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation," the SIU said in a release.
