Waterloo, Kitchener declare snow events as winter storm moves into region

Expect up to 15 cm of snow Monday with heavier snow causing low visibility at times, Environment Canada has warned in a winter weather travel advisory. As of 11:59 tonight, Waterloo and Kitchener have declared a snow event and issued a street parking ban.

With a winter weather travel advisory issued for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County, the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener have declared snow events and banned street parking as of tonight at 11:59 p.m.

In separate releases sent out Monday afteroon, both cities ask that residents move their cars from the streets by midnight or risk being ticketed and towed.

This is because Environment Canada warns as much as 15 cm of snow could fall Monday. Snow is expected to move into the area in the morning, followed by a break in the afternoon.

Parking will be prohibited on all streets at any time during a snow event and remain in effect until it is cancelled.

"Only a few centimetres are expected from this initial round of snow. Another more significant round of snow is expected to move into the area this afternoon or early this evening," the advisory says.

"The snow will taper off to flurries late tonight with a risk of freezing drizzle."

Environment Canada says anyone driving, cycling or walking should be aware of hazardous winter road conditions.

"Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather," the advisory says. That includes that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. As well, visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Monday will start at –6 C, warming to –1 C.

Tuesday's forecast says flurries are expected in the morning with a risk of freezing drizzle and a high of 1 C.
