Waterloo's OpenText sues Box for more than $268M

OpenText, a Waterloo company which specializes in enterprise information management, is suing Box for more than $268 million for patent infringement.

OpenText is Canada's largest software company

Waterloo-based software company OpenText says it is seeking more than $268 million in patent infringement damages from Box, a online file sharing and cloud management company based in Los Altos, California.

OpenText, which offers enterprise information management services large corporations, claims Box has infringed 200 claims across 12 patents.

The company first filed a patent infringement suit against Box on June 5, 2013 in California. OpenText says in addition to the patent infringement, it is seeking interest, damages and attorney fees.

"“OpenText welcomes fair competition, but will not allow others to take and use Open Text’s intellectual property,”  said Greg Secord, OpenText vice president of investor relations, in a statement to CBC News.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
