Waterloo Regional Police officer suspended while SIU investigates

A six-year veteran with Waterloo Regional Police has been suspended while the province's Special Investigations Unit investigates an allegation of sexual assault that allegedly occurred in Kitchener earlier this month.

A six-year member of the Waterloo Regional Police has been suspended as a result of an investigation into an off-duty matter, the force says.

In a statement to CBC News, the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said they are "investigating a Waterloo Regional Police Service officer in relation to an allegation of sexual assault that allegedly occurred in Kitchener on the weekend of October 14, 2017."

In a release that provided few details, WRPS said the officer has been suspended with pay, which is required under the province's Police Services Act.

Privacy details withheld

Police and SIU did not disclose the gender of the officer, any details about the incident or the detachment in the region where the officer works.

The force said no further information would be provided because of the SIU investigation.

The SIU said they will not be releasing further details to protect the identity and privacy of the complainant ‎and others involved.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
